Welcome to the Houston Durgabari’s annual Durga Puja page for 2012. Culturally, Durga Puja is the hub of festivity of the bengalees. It is the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year celebrations put together and more.
In India, the spiritual philosophies weave into the social practices and thought in an inseparable way. Mother Durga, in the spiritual scriptures, is not only a Goddess entrusted with the daunting task of killing the evil Mahisasura but is also the loving daughter coming down to visit her maike on earth with her four children. The navaratri or the nine days of vacation is awaited all year that ends with the visharjan or their teary-eyed farewell. Besides all the gift-giving rituals among families and friends, and wearing new clothes, mother Durga’s visit connotes our resolve to purify ourselves of evil thoughts and actions and to propel us on the devotional path.
